New Horizon for Sustainability in Pakistan

I have been travelling in different villages near Faisalabad. While my visit, I figured out various ways of utilizing natural resources available in rural areas. Pakistan is an agricultural country, contributing 25% to GDP. In addition, there is an abundance of agri-waste, bio-mass can help us fight the energy crises in Pakistan but poor handling of these resources leading us to unsustainable world. Unlike other countries, the livestock business in Pakistan has been growing rapidly more than ever before. Thus, making investment into this sector has considered to be a sagacious decision since its confirmation of profitability at the inception.

According to a study, one cow produce waste that is equivalent to the waste of 18 people. The waste generated from the cows is highly enriched with carbonaceous material having a great potential for biogas generation. The majority of people live in rural areas and each household has cows and goats. There is huge potential for biogas generation form cow dung, and other waste.

Rule of thumb

Roughly 10 kg of bio-waste is needed to produce 1 m3 of biogas. The amount contains about 6 kWh of energy.

Benefits of Biogas Plant in Rural Areas

Since Pakistan has been suffering from energy crises and utilization of bio-waste to generate would be a great initiative. The idea of installing small scale biogas plant will help villagers to understand the current challenges, and to educate them for effectively using the natural resources. The use of waste will eventually reduce the greenhouse gas emission. It will also help to close the nutrient cycle of the earth. The waste obtained from the biogas plant after specific time period can be utilized as an excellent fertilizer.

Hence the idea of using cow dung with agri-waste at small scale level in rural areas will bolster our vision for sustainability, but the sad reality is people are reluctant to understand the concept of science and technology in daily life. I see it as a challenge and will fight to save the future for our posterity.
