Mountains, Plateaus, and Valleys: Terrestrial characteristics of earth and other planets

There are nine planets in our galaxy. Five of them are known as terrestrial planets as written below

·         Earth

·         Mercury

·         Venus

·         Mars

These planets are known as inner planets as they are close to Sun. “Terra” is a Latin word. The three planets mercury, venus and mars show similar attributes to Earth. They are composed primarily of rocky material and have solid surfaces.

In planetary geology, Earth’s Moon is typically included with four Terrestrial planets as the Moon is superlatively large planet.

One of the most promising features of the terrestrial planet is cooling mechanism, as these terrestrial planets began to cool they form crusts and elements that are combined and crystallized with rocks and minerals. The cooling process of terrestrial planets forms silicate minerals. The most important silicate minerals fall into two groups as written below

·         Light -colored silicate minerals

o   Quartz

o   Orthoclase

o   Feldspar

o   Plagioclase feldspar

o   Muscovite mica

·         Dark-colored silicate minerals

o   Present on Earth’s see floor

o   Rich in iron and Magnesium and include the following

§  Olivine

§  Pyroxene

§  Hornblende

§  Biotite mica

Silicates are the basic building blocks of most rocks in the crusts of the Earth and the Moon.
