Earth’s Internal Structure: Three Faults in Tectonic Plates

Tectonic plates are divided into seven main plates. There plates have spread over the planets. The most important element that causes faults in tectonic plates is the motion of major plates. The motion from major plates moves down to minor and to the end of earth known as boundaries. There are three boundaries of major and minor tectonic plates namely

1.       Convergent boundaries

2.       Divergent boundaries

3.       Transform boundaries

Here, are the names of seven major plates on earth and other minor plates as follow

Major tectonic plates

1.    Pacific plate

2.    African plate

3.    Eurasian plate

4.    North American plate

5.    South American plate

6.    Indo-Australian plate

7.    Antarctic plate

Minor tectonic plates

1.    Juan De FUSA plate

2.    COCOS plate

3.    Caribbean plate

4.    NAZCA plate

5.    Arabian plate

6.    Indian plate

7.    Australian plate

Philippines plate

Crust is a solid that floats over the upper part of the mantle that is known as fluid. That is why; these plates are not still but always move. Their movement is same as you’ve seen piece of paper floating on water surface.

Tectonic plates and their boundaries

The cracks between the plates of earth are known as faults. Due to such cracks the crust is divided into different plates. These plates either minor or major are in constant motion as they float on melted rocks. Due to the movements of plates earth crust develops a layer that is known as fault.

Fault originates from such areas where crust of the earth is weak and such areas are known as fault zone. There movements cause faults in the plates as follows

1.       Faults in convergent plates boundaries

2.       Faults in divergent plates boundaries

3.       Faults in transform or conservative boundaries

The motion of tectonic plates towards each other is known as faults in convergent plates. Convergent zones show the motion of huge plates.

The motion of tectonic plates away from each other is known as divergent plates. It causes lava to ridge from the crust of earth and the process known as volcanic eruption.

The third fault is known as transform fault that exist in transform or conservative plates. In this type of fault, plates slides from each other.
